Safe Kids Worldwide Philippines (SKWP) together with FedEx, our official sponsor for the Walk This Way Program, will celebrate the International Walk to School Month on November 14, 2014 with the theme “SAFETY- A RIGHT OF EVERY PEDESTRIAN”.
The issue of road traffic injuries has become a worldwide pandemic killing over 250,000 children annually and injuring 10 million. In the Philippines, there are more than 20 million children who walk to and from schools daily making them extremely vulnerable to road traffic injuries. It is in this context that we celebrate the International Walk to School Month (IWTSM) to draw attention and attract support for the Decade of Action for Road Safety (DoARS) 2011-2020, a United Nations declaration, calling countries into action to address worsening road traffic injuries. National efforts have been made and continue to be undertaken by the Department of Transportation and Communications, Department of Public Works and Highways and the World Health Organization.
Related to this event, SKWP and FedEx are organizing an advocacy walk followed by a short program on safe walking on November 14, 2014 at 8 am at the Commonwealth Elementary School, Commonwealth Ave., Quezon City. It aims to highlight with the school children their safety while on the road and improve the walking environment around schools. The short program will be followed by a classroom teaching of FedEx volunteers to Grade V pupils on pedestrian safety tips. We are inviting 600 guests during the event including the 450 students of Commonwealth and Benigno Aquino Elementary Schools as well as our partners from government as well as non-government organizations.
While Pubic Elementary Schools from other beneficiary cities are encouraged too to organize their own advocacy walks during the day to celebrate the International Walk to School Month.
